It
has often been said that the youths are the leaders of tomorrow. Yet what do we
have today? APC has fielded as its presidential candidate, General Buhari who
is 72 years old!
As
governor Fashola stated during an APC rally in Lagos state, “You
know what you must do. Open your eyes clearly. You see, this job is a tough
job. When I took this job, at the age of 44, I was counting the number of white
hair on my head. Today, at 52, I am counting the number of black hair on my
head,” You need youthfulness to do this job. That
man (Mr. Agbaje) is already 60; he cannot cope with this job. If you call him
at night he will not take your phone,”
We can therefore conclude
that Governor Fashola was sending us a coded message never to vote for their
presidential candidate.
What
of Malam Nasir El-Rufai, the current APC
Gubernatorial candidate for Kaduna state in a 2010 interview with The Sun
Newspapers. In the interview, he said “Obama is 48 and Cameron is 43 for God’s
sake. So, why are we recycling leaders that ruled this country very well or
very badly 25 years ago? I was 25 year old when Buhari and Babangida were Heads
of State and I am now 50 and they still want to be Head of State. I don’t
understand that at all and I call on the young people of Nigeria to take their
future into their hands and ensure that in the next election, they vote for a
new generation of leaders. I think that we will not make progress until we
break the link from the past and just move on. 70 per cent of Nigerians are
below the age of 40. Many of these young people, the next generation, as they
are called, are on internet services such as Facebook and twitter, using
Blackberry and if you ask any of these people running for Presidency, they will
think that Blackberry is a fruit…….. People like General Babangida and General
Buhari should just disappear. They should give way to a new set of people with
new ideas”
We
have a minimum age requirement in the constitution, maybe it’s time for a
maximum age as well.
General
Buhari, are you fit enough to lead this country for four more years? Science
shows that 25% of people over 70 have a mild cognitive impairment.
Remember you said in 2011 that it was your
last attempt at the presidency. Are you no longer the man of integrity which
used to be your only calling card?
General,
we believe it’s time to retire, leave the stage for younger people. It’s not
too late!
President
Jonathan has the right combination of energy and innovation to take our country
to the next level. Let’s reelect him.
