After a rigorous battle by a team of 40 Indian specialist Doctors to save formerly conjoined twins at a New Delhi hospital, success came at last as the two girls were successfully separated. The information regarding this development was disclosed on Wednesday by the hospital authority that had earlier envisioned complication in the surgery operation.

The one-year-old girls from Nigeria survived an 18-hour operation, even after their mother and the hospital authority appeared uncertain about their survival.

“They were fused at their back when they came to us, which is very rare,” paediatric surgeon Prashant Jain said, stressing on the difficulties the hospital authorities foresaw before the operation.

“Usually the twins are joined in the head or the upper body. It posed a huge challenge to our team of doctors,” The Doctor, Jain said.

After the survival of the twins, Hussaina and Hassana, Malama Badariyya Badaru, the mother of the twins, said she was delighted as she now carries her daughters individually-unattached

Narrating the success story, Jain further said “It was all nerve-wracking work. But it feels great to see them happy, healthy and independent”.

“We carried out rehearsals using dummies. All tubes, wires, injections and drugs were colour-coded in pink or blue (for each girl) to avoid any mistake,” he said.
